Walking To Sunnyside

You can walk to Sunnyside from the ferry. Turn right out of the ferry port past the bus terminal and over the bridge on the road. Take the right turn onto the coastal footpath. Looking back to the ferry terminal there is a great view across the nature reserve

The view across the nature reserve
Walk along the coastal defences, past some impressive houses and hotels. You will reach an old fort, this is Fort Victoria and has some attractions. Including a tea shop, aquarium and model railway.

The view back to Cowes marina
Around the point at fort victoria As you walk around the promontary (this is Sconce point) the coastal footpath goes along the beach. You can walk along a bridleway into fort victoria nature reserve, we will continue along the beach, and join this later on.

This beach always has an interesting collection of flotsam and jetsam and it's always worth beachcombing, you never know what you might find. The best thing we've found is a sea bean.

Along the beach
Leafy walk Before the beach runs out, look for a path going up thro' the trees. This recently (2002) had some conservation work done on it and now has steps on the steeper parts. At the top it pops out onto the bridleway I mentioned earlier. Turn right.

As you walk thro' this leafy wood there are ferns, lords and ladies, marsh marigolds and many other moisture loving plants. Occasionally you will get a glimpse of the sea thro' the trees.

Sea framed by trees
viewpoint looking NE The bridleway reaches a short flight of steps which you climb to reach a viewpoint with several benches. It is a pleasant place to stop for a break and take in the magnificent views.

Looking to your left you can see Hurst Castle and the lighthouse.

You will get a better view from the chalet, as this is opposite Cliff End, on the mainland. Cliff End forms the northern part of the site. Continue along the path which takes you around the back of Fort Albert and into the top end of the holiday site.

Nearly there now.

As you look down over the holiday site you can see the Needles from here. Carry on left along the tarmac road, This is the coastal path and continues on to the holiday site and out the other side.

When you reach the site the chalet is on the bottom righthand side of the U shape of bungalows on the cliff top. Looking down from the cliff top you can see Colwell Bay.

Colwell Bay
Colwell Bay There is a slipway on the far side of the site where you can go down to the beach.

If you walk along the beach towards the Needles you can get a good view of Fort Albert as you look back along Colwell Beach. This is another good beach for beachcombing.
